Be interested in whatever you do! |
 |
At a deserted museum, ask the staff or curator to show you
around. They’re often delighted when someone shows genuine interest and will
provide interesting background information on otherwise stuffy exhibits. |
 |
Popular tourist sites often offer interesting excursions, but
the crowds can be a real nuisance. Visiting early in the morning (or very
late) can help. |
 |
Make friends! Experiences with local people are always a treat.
Fellow tourists might persuade you to do things you wouldn’t have thought of
yourself. |
 |
When travelling with a friend from back home, respect your
chum’s wishes and privacy. If needed, take time off before you end up killing
each other! |
 |
Swap books with fellow travelers. It provides interesting
reads, saves you money and space for souvenirs! |
 |
When roaming the country, don’t book your accommodation too long in advance,
as that
will decrease your flexibility to change your plans. Be
informed about local holidays and festivities, as prices will soar and
accommodation is often limited. |
 |
Often (but certainly not always), a (fake) wedding ring will
discourage unwanted attention. |
 |
The less eye contact you make, the less attention you will get
from street vendors. Sunglasses sometimes do the trick as well. |
 |
When having too much to carry, or you have equipment you won’t
be needing for the duration of your trip, strategically sending some items
home is an option. |
 |
Swap information with fellow travelers and staff at your
accommodation. They are the most up-to-date source of information. |
