Traveler's Tips: Safety

Always put valuables in a pocket that can be closed. In crowded places, carry your bag in front of you.

Never leave your bag unattended. In a bar or restaurant, wrap a handle firmly around your chair or your leg.

If robbed, report and get papers to prove it! You will probably need them for your insurance back home. This can usually be done at the local police station, but beware as it often takes a lot of time...

Never provide credit card or bank details unless you really have to. Don’t let a waiter wander off with your credit card.

Make sure your luggage is already off the vehicle when you pay the driver.

Beware when something suspicious happens, such as being in large crowds of people or children, people asking directions or spilling anything on your clothes.

If you receive a fine from the police or customs officials, don’t make a fuss. If they seem to be nit-picking, ask for their identification and tell them you will follow them to their office. That usually is enough to discourage anyone posing as an officer. Except within a police station or customs office, NEVER give your passport to anyone!
