In Santiago's Barrio Recoleta
is the impressive Cementerio General (municipal cemetary). It seems a museum for mausoleums, as thousands
are standing in apparent random order and different styles (classic, neogothic, jugendstil, and even a
replica of a pyramid). Troughout the cemetary are the ‘galleries of the dead’, where
the deceased are stacked, row upon row, in narrow concrete
spaces covered with a small plaque. From the main entrance, go
straight until you see the stylized, white marble tomb of
Allende. On the left is the huge tomb of Nazario Elguin, built
as a Maya temple, with a statue of the demon lord of Xibalba
on top. Behind is a statue of Christ on Mount Golgotha, covered
with plaques of thankful families. Still, it is not a somber
place, as many visitors attend the graves of their loved ones
with their children.
